Check out this absolutely mesmerizing (17 minute!) video of a French amateur radio operator who rolls his own vacuum tube triodes! I love the ease with which he performs these rather high-end skills (like glass forming), the gestural flourishes (like it's hand magic), and the Zelig-esque soundtrack.

Here is the latest project on display at the Made in Chelsea exhibit. Always looks nice on a wall. Nanda also has a few of her paintings there. I am really liking this dot thing I am doing. This is dot Nanda #1; measures 30" x 30".

My new poject

Here is a "work-in-progress" shot of a new project. I am not sure what to call it. A painting? — there is no paint used. Pointillism? — I wouldn't even come close to Seurat. Dottillism? — Maybe...
As you can see my muse is the same, still so inspiring.... This is a step up from my last project which is kind of close to this. Once this is done I will take a better photograph during the day.

The Saatchi online gallery is really great. Although the site is somewhat of a usability disaster, they are working hard at updating it when they can. Not bad for a free service...

New Tube Sculptures!

I've started to make some new sculptures recently. A lot has been going on, but getting back to it is important. These are a bit smaller in size and I have been a bit more picky with the type of tubes I am using. Problem is that many of these tubes look the same — it's the unusual ones that I like the most. Oh, if you could only see my collection!

Here are a few photos, not all of them but some worthwhile, just to give you a glimpse. I will try to take more photos soon and maybe even add a few to the Web site.

Nixie tube clock

Remember this? Here is the clock I was working on. Looks great. I especially love the way the numbers glow in and out as the numbers count up. Nixie tubes rock. This project (with a litte teaching from the father-in-law) got me to be quite a good soldering king. The parts were extremely small and took some practicing. This isn't like fixing an amp. Let me know what you think.

So this blog is supposed to be about my sculpture and other things but mainly about my sculpture. I was showing it to my brother this weekend and he noticed that there really wasn't much about the sculpture going on on my blog.

I can't wait to finish this thing. I have no idea how I'll do it because soldering is not my specialty.

It's a Nixie Tube Clock for IN-16 Tunes with complete components. Each tube works as a digit on the clock. I will post the finished item once it is done.

Holy 3-D Printing!

Too late for this year, but now I know what I want for Christmas. This is revolutionary! I can already imagine the possibilities. And it's from Sears. Well, it's not totally printing, but this will allow you to cut up, down, sideways, in and out all from the same machine. This all is one is about $1800 and works from your computer or memory card (mac?). This the true age of D.I.Y. and I love it.
It's made by Craftsman. (thanks to make).
Here's another cool link on the machine before it was brought over by Sears maybe.

Nanda in squares

Ok here it is. My first completed painting of Nanda. It's made up of tiny little squares and I think it looks better when you squint or remove your glasses.

I tried making a painting of her a year or so back but never came close to finishing it. Now it's too late. Sometimes when you let something go, it goes away for too long. I can't imagine getting back to it anytime soon.

I am really glad I finished this one. It feels good.

I have to admit I like some of Jeff Koons' work. I like the oversized stuff. Eventhough he is known for being kind of a weird person, he sure has an eye. If you haven't see the blue dog in person, you should.

This bright, playful exhibition examines our culture's love of luxury, spectacle, shiny things, and our own reflections. Many of the works in Shiny play with the commodity status of art, both embracing and slyly critiquing conspicuous display. You'll watch Andy Warhol's helium-filled Silver Clouds floating sensuously on air currents and see yourself and the Wexner Center's architecture reflected in the shimmering surfaces of Jeff Koons's 10-foot-tall Balloon Dog. Other artists in the exhibition are Rachel Harrison, Jim Hodges, Louise Lawler, former Wexner Center Residency Award recipient Josiah McElheny, Michael Minelli, Mai-Thu Perret, and Kelley Walker. Most of their works were created in the last five years, and Minelli, a sculptor based in Los Angeles, exhibits a new piece commissioned by the Wexner Center specifically for the show.

My wife Nanda has really interesting paintings she makes. We both are part of the Made in Chelsea exhibit at the Spencer Lofts.

Where has Juxtapoz gone?

Juxtapoz used to be my favorite magazine. It covered some of the coolest art I have ever seen. The magazine helped me discover people like Mark Ryden and other fascinating artists. I found it inspirational. Also, I subscribed to it and then even put an ad in it promoting sparklemachine.com.

However, I do have to admit that the publication has recently taken a sharp turn for the worst. Now it covers artist that look more and more all the same and tend to copy each other like crazy. If I see another Ryden or McPherson rip-off I think I am going to... Also, please diversify a little, enough with the borderline porn dirty art that just looks gross. Where is the inspiration? Where is the real art? They use to cover almost anything between hot rod art and the renaissance. Oh well, maybe it's just me.

A New Exhibit!

Here we go... My wife and I were invited to participate in a community exhibit. It's called Made in Chelsea. I am showing 2 of my sculptures. Tubes II and Tubes III to be exact. My wife is showing 4 small paintings she made (nanvan.com).

It's pretty cool. I am eager to see the reactions, sell a few and then get on to making more pieces!

The Exhibit is located at The Spencer Lofts -- 60 Dudley Street, Chelsea, MA.
